Who should use this section?

  • Pharmacy Leaders and Clinical Educators who support oncology pharmacy services
  • Pharmacists new to oncology practice
  • Pharmacy departments building oncology onboarding programs

This training guide is designed to support the onboarding and development of pharmacists transitioning into oncology practice. It provides a structured, competency-based approach to ensure pharmacists acquire the foundational knowledge and clinical skills required for safe and effective oncology patient care. The overall approach is meant to be tailored to the individual pharmacist or pharmacist group while considering each unique practice setting.

NOTE: This section focuses on the training of pharmacists and does not address the potential role for pharmacy technicians to perform some of the activities and services outlined in the model.

Sample practice model for structured clinical services

This section introduces the concepts of Essential and Enhanced Clinical Services (see diagram) that form the basis of a clinical practice model that can be adapted based on patient needs, practice setting, and clinician expertise. Being able to classify services in this way is helpful during the initial steps of creating a training plan because the training plan should address service needs.

Case Scenarios
